A seemingly silly event made on Facebook called “Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All Of Us” has blown up. As of July 26th about 1.9 million people marked they are attending and an additional 1.4 million saying they are interested . Social media has been flooded with jokes and memes revolving around the event.
Since the event was made brands have been jumping on the bandwagon with social media posts and some even saying they will be selling products at the event. Even the Air Force has spoken up about the event warning that it is not safe to in fact enter Area 51.
You may be asking what this has to do with digital advertising. We wouldn’t want anyone to feel alienated, so let’s bridge that gap for you.
Here are a 5 things you can learn about digital advertising from the Area 51 event:
Build Communities Around Your Brand
A culture has been created around social media where users who have a shared sense of humor and common experiences join together and become one. In the storm Area 51 event title they suggest, “they can’t stop us all”. Everyone has been excited to join in on planning how they are going to storm the base and what they are going to do once they leave with their new alien. The takeaway here is that when you make a customer feel like they are a part of the brand and have a connection to other customers they often display more loyalty.
Have A Clear Call To Action
Say what you want about the event but it has a clear call-to-action, storm area 51, or as the creator of the event said, “Let’s see them aliens”. This simple concept has been easily passed around and it’s made its way all over social media and even on multiple news outlets. When it comes to your advertisements you want to make sure it is clear what the next steps you want the user to take.
Keep Up With Trends
Bud Light has recently posted an Area 51 themed label. They announced that if their post gets 51,000 retweets they will make it a reality. As of now they have 41 thousand retweets and 62 thousand likes. Many other brands have also capitalized on the buzz around Area 51. Arbys even announced that they will be serving food at the event. What brands are quickly learning is that it is important to stay updated on trends. One way you can make sure you are keeping up with trends is by using google trends to find what is currently being searched and to get ideas for SEO keywords.
Know Your Audience
The creator of the event said that he had no clue how big all of this would get. He also didn’t realize how many people would take it seriously. His mistake was not realizing that millennials are down for anything if it makes a good meme. When it comes to digital advertising it is important you know your customers and their behaviors.
Power of Social Media
The fact that this event has had celebrities talking about it and the Air Force seriously concerned says a lot about how powerful social media is. Not only did the event get tons of responses but social media is now filled with posts and memes about storming Area 51. Social media is a great way to get your business out there and build relationships while spending little to no money. The Social Media Examiner stated in their report that “93% of all marketers indicated that their social media efforts have generated more exposure for their businesses.” We’re not saying we are going to the Area 51 raid, but be on the lookout for our new green intern September 21st.
